Tutorial about how to Crochet Crop Tops

If you’re looking for the perfect summer wardrobe addition, why not consider making your own crocheted crop top? All you’ll need is a skein of yarn, a few basic crocheting skills, and around 20 minutes to create a classic halter neckline top that looks great from the front and leaves your back bare.

There are many reasons why you should consider using crocheted crop tops:

  • Comfortable and stylish: Crocheted crop tops are designed to be lightweight and airy, making them the perfect choice for summer outfits;
  • Versatile: They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, so you can create a variety of looks;
  • Unique: They are one-of-a-kind pieces that will make you stand out from the crowd;
  • Easy to care for: Crocheted crop tops are typically made from natural fibers, which makes them easy to clean and maintain;
  • Affordable: these clothes are often more affordable than other types of clothing, making them a great choice for those on a budget.

Part 1: Begin by casting on stitches and then crocheting the band

Crochet Yarn

Crochet Yarn

Choose a skein of worsted weight yarn in any color

Gather a 4.5-ounce (127.5 g) skein of yarn that is 227 yards (208 m) in length. Choose a soft yarn for your crop top so it is comfortable to wear. Note that you will not need the entire skein. Avoid using 100% cotton yarn, as it may shrink when put in the dryer. To have a soft, cotton crop top that retains its shape, select a cotton-synthetic blend yarn.

Create a slip knot and place it on a US size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook.

Begin by taking approximately 6 inches (15 cm) of yarn from the skein and looping it around two of your fingers. Hold the loop in place and insert the crochet hook through it, then grab the working yarn with the hook. Pull the loop so it slides onto the hook.

Remember that the size of the hook you choose will make a difference in the tightness of the stitches, so if you usually crochet more tightly or loosely, you may want to use a smaller or larger hook. However, keep in mind that loose stitches may make the crop top see-through, so it’s best to wear something underneath if you choose to use a larger hook.

Place the measuring tape across your body from one side to the other.

Place the end of a measuring tape at the side of your ribcage where you would like your crop top to fall.

Stretch the tape to the opposite side of your ribcage and take note of the number. To avoid twisting the tape, ask a friend to help you with measuring.

This number will be the measurement for the length of the foundation chain for the bottom of the crop top. Alternatively, you can measure from the ribcage to your neckline and use this measurement as you crochet the body.

Create a chain the length of the desired measurement.

To create a chain, start by wrapping the yarn around the hook. Pull the hook through the loop to create a stitch and repeat this process until the foundation chain is the desired length.

Measure the chain to ensure that it is the correct size for your project. For a medium-sized crop top, you may need to chain 19 inches (48 cm). Hold the foundation chain across your torso from one side of your ribcage to the other to check if it will cover your torso in the way you want.

Part 2: Making the Body

Work a single crochet stitch into each chain of your foundation row.

To make a single crochet (SC) stitch, insert your hook into the nearest chain. Pull the working yarn through the chain, then wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through both of the loops on the hook.

Repeat this process for each chain in the row to form the bottom of your crop top.

Make 1 chain and turn your work.

After completing the first row, make a chain by wrapping the yarn around your crochet hook and pulling up a loop. Then, turn the piece of fabric over and start crocheting the next row. You will continue working back and forth across the row to create the band, followed by decreasing rows to shape the body of the crop top.

Continue working single crochet stitches across the row until the band is the desired size.

Crochet 1 SC into each stitch until the band reaches the length you desire for your crop top. The length can vary from 3 to 10 rows, depending on if you want a short or long crop top.

To determine the length, hold the band directly below your breasts. When you reach the end of a row, chain 1 then continue to the next row. Once you have crocheted the desired number of rows, stop and the band should cover as much of your torso as you like.

Start the halter pattern by decreasing the first row.

When you reach the end of the row, do not crochet a stitch. Instead, turn your work and skip the first stitch.

Work one single crochet stitch in every stitch across the row. This will create diagonal sides that will form a halter-style top.

If you wish to create a V-neck crop top, crochet two triangular pieces that cover your bust and attach them to the band that you have just finished.

Decrease the rows of your crochet work until you have completed the neckline.

For the halter portion that covers your breasts and creates the neckline, skip the first stitch of each row and make a single crochet into the remaining stitches of the row.

Keep doing this until the neckline is the desired height. To check the size, hold the piece up against your torso regularly.

Part 3: Crocheting the Straps

When crocheting the body of the crop top, create a chain that is between 120 and 150 links long. Do not cut the yarn when you reach the end of this chain. When you finish the last row of the body, which is the neckline, begin making a chain that is long enough to wrap around your body and secure the crop top when worn. If you are making a crop top in a small size, crochet around 120 chains. For a larger size, you should work closer to 150 chains.

To make the strap stronger and more comfortable, insert your crochet hook through the last chain you made and then wrap the yarn around it. Pull the yarn through the loops and make a slip stitch. Continue slip stitching through each previous chain until you get back to the neckline where you started the strap.

Continue single crocheting across the neckline, making 1 single crochet stitch into every stitch across the row, until you reach the end. Instead of cutting the yarn to begin the opposite strap, just make 1 single crochet stitch into every stitch across the neckline. You are now ready to start the opposite strap.

Make another strap that is the same length as the first one by crocheting an identical chain.

Slip stitch back through the chain just like you did with the first one, being sure to make the same number of chains so the straps are even.

Lay the crop top face down and take 1 of the straps. Pull it diagonally across the crop top, then do the same with the other strap so they form an X shape.

Push your hook from the underside of the top through the bottom corner, grab a strap, and pull it through. Repeat this step on the opposite corner. You can then put on the crop top and tie the straps behind your back.

I got this tutorial from Wiki How. Just remembering to give the credits.
