A Stitch of Empowerment: How India’s Crochet Queens Are Changing Lives One Loop at a Time

World Record Broken by Indian Crochet Collective

A group of women from Chennai, India — known as Mother India’s Crochet Queens (MICQ) — has just made history. Not only have they entered the Guinness World Records , but they’ve also woven together a powerful story of community, creativity, and female empowerment.

On March 9th, the group set a new world record for the “Largest Display of Crochet Squares,” showcasing an incredible 100,581 individual pieces — shattering the previous record of 58,168 squares held by Mahila Manovikas since September 2024.

But for these women, the victory goes far beyond numbers. It’s about unity, resilience, and reclaiming independence through the art of crochet.

More Than Just a Record — A Message in Every Square

At the heart of the exhibition, the colorful squares formed a meaningful message: one of strength, solidarity, and empowerment. The project was led by Subashri Natarajan , founder of MICQ, who has now earned her sixth Guinness World Record in crochet. Yet for her, the real reward isn’t the title — it’s the transformation happening in the lives of the women behind each stitch.

“Crochet is more than a hobby — it’s a tool for social change. We bring women together, teach them skills, and help them earn an income,” says Subashri in an interview with Guinness World Records.

Weaving Opportunities Across Communities

Through a growing network of over 1,500 artisans , MICQ provides yarn, hooks, and training to women across India, empowering them to master the craft and build financial independence. For many, especially those who become homemakers after marriage, crochet offers a creative outlet and a path toward personal fulfillment and economic freedom.

The group also runs craft schools in villages and cities , mentoring the next generation of women artisans.

“It’s not just about breaking records,” says Subashri. “It’s about breaking barriers.”

Stitched with Gratitude: From Art to Service

So what happens to over 100,000 crochet squares after the record is set? They’re transformed into warm winter essentials — scarves, ponchos, and more — which are then donated to the Indian Army stationed along the country’s borders. Each piece carries a heartfelt message of gratitude and support from the women of India.

With every loop and chain, the Mother India’s Crochet Queens continue to prove that craft can be a catalyst for change — turning thread into hope, and patterns into purpose.
